This dashboard presents information on case dispositions among cases arraigned in Bronx Criminal Courts since 2019. Cases that are open and have not yet reached disposition are categorized as “Pending.” Data on Case Dispositions can be separated by Charge Severity and Charge Type by using the filter buttons at the bottom of the dashboard.
After a criminal case is generated through arraignment, there are various ways in which the case can be disposed. For example, a case can end in a conviction, dismissal, or acquittal at trial. Additionally, it can be consolidated with another case or transferred to another court.
Data in this dashboard is based on the year in which the case was disposed. The case may have begun in a previous year. Disposition year is not shown in this dashboard.
Data Notes:
- The unit of analysis for this dashboard is an arraigned criminal case, defined by the unique combination of defendant and docket number. For example, if a docket number included two co-defendants, each co-defendant would be treated as a unique case. In addition, an individual person may have more than one case counted in the analysis if they were arraigned multiple times on different cases from 2019.
- Cases are grouped based on the year in which they were arraigned, not disposed. As a result, cases might have been disposed in a different year than the one in which they were arraigned. For example, a case that was initially arraigned in 2022 and disposed in 2023 is counted in 2022, not in 2023.
- Charge Severity and Charge Type are defined based on the most serious charge at arraignment, not disposition.
- Charges at arraignment and case disposition may differ. For example, a case may have been charged as a felony at arraignment, but the disposition charge may be a misdemeanor. In this dashboard, that case would be included as a felony. Similarly, if a case is dismissed, the charge represents the charge at arraignment.
- Data Source: Criminal case and court measures are based on data from the Office of Court Administration transmitted to the Bronx DA.
